Middle East

PRESS RELEASE - Brussels, 18 July 2006

In the context of the deepening crisis in the Middle East Daniel Cohn-Bendit stated:

"With the crisis in the Middle East deepening, the international community cannot continue to stand idly by. Western governments should play an active role in ensuring a peaceful negotiated settlement to the current conflict. As a proven international politician, respected both in Israel and Palestine, Joschka Fischer would be ideally placed to play a mediating role, as an EU envoy, aimed at negotiating a ceasefire. Following this, an international initiative based on the 'roadmap' for peace in the Middle East should be re-launched and an international conference should be prepared with a view to achieving peace in the region."
