EU Parliament "coalition of hypocrites" approves European Commission

Parliament approved today of the new commission "Barroso II", and this despite the fact that the three biggest parties were unable to agree on a common text to justify their approval. The Greens/EFA have voted against.
EPP, Socialists and Liberals don't know what to say about the Barroso II Commission
The three biggest groups in the European Parliament today decided not to table a resolution on the Barroso II Commission to coincide with the Parliament vote on the designates next Tuesday in Strasbourg.
After having pushed the examination of Jeleva's independance, Daniel Cohn-Bendit declares that this affair only highlights that Barroso doesn't have a firm grip on things.

Dany Cohn-Bendit and Rebecca Harms comment on the EU Parliament Sakharov prize for Freedom of Thought which was awarded to the Russian human rights organisation Memorial and to activists Lyudmila Alexeyeva, Oleg Orlov und Sergey Kovalev.
Iranian journalist Fariba Pajooh was arrested at her home in Tehran on 22 August 2009. She has since been detained in Evin prison without having been informed of the charges against her. Her crime: working as a journalist.

Greens underline need for accountability as UN report is deferred. UN Human Rights Council will today defer a vote on the Goldstone Gaza report until March 2010. The vote on the UN resolution concerning the report was mainly blocked by the US, with the silent support of the EU.
After the success of the French list Europe-Ecologie, DCB takes up his mandate as MEP - his last, as he assures. The Co-President of the Green party is convinced that we must find European answers to the current crisis.
Dany Cohn-Bendit cautions against the stagnation of German politics - even with a red-red-green majority. For a true socio-ecological alternative, radical changes are needed - including within the Green party.
