What are the consequences of the financial and economic crisis and how best to address them? What role could a Green New Deal play? Following last Friday's EU summit and in the build-up to this Saturday's G20 summit in Washington, the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament are hosting a conference to tackle these questions.
Green MEPs Caroline Lucas, Pierre Jonckheer and Heide Rühle will be joined by financial experts and economists, as well as trade union representatives and academics, to debate the issues. Greens/EFA Co-president Daniel Cohn-Bendit will present conclusions in the final session. Having long argued for stricter controls and tighter financial regulation, the Greens are calling for a new structure for European financial institutions and a cap on exorbitant financial sector salaries and bonuses. Recognising the link between the economic and environmental crises, the Greens call for Green New Deal with an investment plan that will draw inspiration from Keynes, while prioritising climate protection and the environment.
